  • Teaser Tuesday – Anne of Green Gables

    teaser_tuesdays1MizB of Should Be Reading hosts the Teaser Tuesdays weekly event

    Here are the rules:
    * Grab your current read
    * Let the book fall open to a random page
    * Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12
    *You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!
    * Please avoid spoilers!

    This week’s teaser is:
    ” ‘Oh, there’s so much scope for imagination in a wind. So I’ll not talk anymore just now, Marilla.’
    ‘Thanks be to goodness for that,’ breathed Marilla in devout relief.”

    pg. 77  – Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

    – In honor of my trip to PEI, I’ve been rereading some of Ms. Montgomery’s classics, including her most beloved heroine, Anne. This precocious orphan stole my heart a long time ago, and if you haven’t read her story, you absolutely must!

    Teaser Tuesday – Persuasion

    Here are the rules:
    * Grab your current read

    * Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12

    * Please avoid spoilers!

    This week’s teaser is:
    ” Whether former feelings were to be renewed must be brought to the proof; former times must undoubtedly be brought to the recollection of each; they could not but be reverted to; the year of their engagement could not but be named by him, in the little narratives or descriptions which conversation called forth.”

    pg. 46  – Persuasion by Jane Austen

    – Since I finished Pride and Prejudice, it’s time to move forward with more Jane Austen books. Got to get them checked off my 30 by 30 list. And since Pride and Prejudice was like pulling teeth for me to read, I decided next up should be the shortest. Is that lame? Just a little bit. 🙂 So even though the book doesn’t have Rupert Penry-Jones like the newest movie version does, I fully expect to enjoy this book.

    Teaser Tuesday – Love Remains

    This week’s teaser is:
    ” Zarah hoped her expression showed her friend just how insane she thought Flannery was. She could count the number of dates she’d had since moving to Nashville on two hands, with a couple of fingers left over.”
    pg. 62  – Love Remains by Kaye Dacus

    – Last week my friend Kaye brought me a treat, an early copy of her upcoming book, Love Remains, the first in her Matchmakers series. Now the book doesn’t come out until August, but it’s well-worth your wait! This contemporary romance is mingled with lots of comedy, as Zarah comes face to face with her teenage love Bobby, who she hasn’t seen in years. Of course their grandparents are determined to get them together, so the Matchmakers set to work. I’m really loving Kaye’s wit and zing, and her sense of setting in Nashville. Don’t miss out on this book!

    This week’s teaser is:
    ” She was at least free from the offence of Mr. Darcy’s further notice; though often standing within a very short distance of her, quite disengaged, he never came near enough to speak. She felt it to be the probable consequence of her allusions to Mr. Wickham, and rejoiced in it.”
    pg. 102  – Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

    – I recently joined a bookclub with some girls at work. Every Tuesday we get together at lunch to talk about the book we’re reading. Right now, that would be Pride and Prejudice. If you can believe it, I’ve never finished this book, so I’m super-excited to get all the way through it. Oh, that Mr. Darcy!

    This week’s teaser is:
    ” Since it was a special occasion, we were eating outisde on the picnic tables by the lake. Someone had hung up  twinkling white Christmas lights on the trees surrounding the tables, and it looked like thousands of fireflights lighting up the sky.”
    pg. 112  – Sleepaway Girls by Jen Calonita

    – I picked up this book after trying to read another YA, which happened to be riddled with angst and when I jumped to the back, proved to have a not-so-happily-ever-after ending. So I picked up Sleepaway Girls, hoping for a sweet, light read that would put a smile on my face. I wasn’t disappointed. 🙂 While not perfect, this book was just as sweet and predictable as I was hoping for. I highly recommend for lightweight beach read.

    This week’s teaser is:
    ” They had been taken away. They had not been killed. He clung to that thought–they had not been killed.”
    pg. 29  – Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen

    – Penned by Gary Paulsen, award-winning author of Hatchet and other books for young adults, Woods Runner is the incredible story of 13-year-old Samuel, who lives in the British colony of Pennsylvania in 1776. When his parents are kidnapped by Indians and British redcoats, he tracks them through the woods that have become his home. Will he be able to rescue them in time? I’m loving this historical, rich with detail and quite a unique voice. Especially recommended for young guys, who are harder to find books for.

    Spin on a Teaser Tuesday!

    In lieu of my normal Teaser Tuesday, I’m so, so excited to tell you about a new book, just out today, called Radical. Written by David Platt, pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, has written a book that is both the most challenging/life-altering and the most encouraging book other than the Bible that I’ve ever read.

    I was reading this book at the same time as several friends of mine, and we couldn’t stop talking  about every chapter as we worked our way through the realization of how easy it is to hijack worshipping Christ and replace it with a faith built on the American Dream. God wants us all to accumulate stuff and be successful, right?

    Not so fast.

    According to David, our role on earth is to proclaim the glory of God, to share the good news of His grace and gospel. Our role is not to choose which parts of scripture we want to follow. Ignoring the parts of the Bible that tell us to care for the poor and widows and orphans isn’t an option. When we serve them we’re serving our God.

    You’ll be blown away by this book. I’m certain of it. Just ask my parents and friends who keep saying “David Platt is ruining my life!” Or ask the families (like David and his wife) who have sold their homes or given away all their things to bless others with the Good News. This message will ruin you. In the best possible way.

    Please find this book at your library or local bookstore. Or check out www.waterbrookmultnomah.com to see about contests to win copies. This is one you can’t miss.

    This week’s teaser is:
    “A linchpin is an unassuming piece of hardware, soemthing you can buy for sixty-nine cents at the local hardware store. It’s not glamorous, but it’s essential. It holds the wheel onto the wagon, the thinger onto the widget. Every successful organization has at least one linchpin; some have dozens or even thousands. ”
    pg. 49  – Linchpin by Seth Godin

    – My new boss gave me a copy of this book. Do you think he’s trying to tell me something? 🙂 But I’m super-excited to read it, as Seth Godin is so well-respected in the business world. Thanks for the book, Dave!

    This week’s teaser is:
    “Outside the Jack and Hammer, a dog growled. Inside, his view of the High Street obstructed by the window at his shoulder, Melrose Plant sat in the curve of the bay drinking Old Peculier and reading Rimbaud.”
    pg. 1  – The Man with a Load of Mischief by Martha Grimes

    – In honor of the recent release of Martha Grimes’ newest book, featuring Richard Jury, I thought I’d offer you the first 2 sentences of her first Richard Jury book. Jess Barnes and my other good friend Rachel love these books, and I can’t wait to dive in and read them too. Apparently Melrose Plant is Jess’s literarly soulmate. I hope to find my own literary soul mate some day. Until then … 🙂

    This week’s teaser is:
    “Heart pounding with fear and regret, Olivia Keene ran as thought hellbounds were on her heels. As though her very life depended upon her escape. ”
    pg. 15  – The Silent Governess by Julie Klassen

    – Three chapters in, and I am hooked! Every chapter the danger is heightened, and our heroine Olivia Keene finds herself deeper and deeper in trouble. I’m so intrigued by the plot about a young woman who saves her mother from her father’s attack, but ends up on the run. I confess the one thing that I’m disappointed about is that I thought Olivia was mute. I thought she was literally a “silent” governess. Nope. Not so much. She’s just hiding secrets. 🙂 But it’s still a lovely book with beautiful writing! Highly recommended so far.
