  • Friday Favorite – Ice Cream Sandwiches

What is it about the summer months that makes ice cream sandwiches so wonderful? It’s like combining my two favorite foods: ice cream and cookies. I love all sorts of flavors of ice cream sandwiches, but the mint Skinny Cow ones are probably my favorite.  They’re so soft and smooth and yummy!

While the winter months in Colorado aren’t quite conducive to a good ice cream sandwich, these summer months have been great. Especially since we don’t have air conditioning.

So what’s your favorite sweet treat for the summer?

    Friday Favorite – Birthday Presents

I love birthdays, and the presents that go along with them. I love giving gifts, and I love getting them. But since last weekend was my birthday, it was my turn to get presents. My friends and family were immensly generous with me, and I was absolutely floored by their thoughtfulness. My family and friends made sure I was stocked up on seasons of Robin Hood and Burn Notice and lots of gift cards.

But there were two gifts that really stood out to me as expectionally thoughtful.

First, my friend Judy Dyson surprised me with a gift that was more for my book release than for my birthday with a gift that made me cry. She’d arranged to have her brother-in-law paint the cover of my book on a large scale. When I first met Willy, I threw my arms around him to thank him. It’s the most beautiful painting because of the love and thoughtfulness behind it. Here’s me and Willy at my last signing in Yuma.

    img_05991

Thank you, Judy and Willy! I love it!

Then after my return to Colorado Springs, I jumped back into work and nearly forgot that I’d just had a birthday. But on Wednesday morning, Jess B., writing buddy-extraordinaire came to my office first thing in the morning with a wrapped gift and said I should open it immediately … so I opened it and found …

Well … let me tell a quick story first. You see, Jess was the one who originally suggested to me that Adam Baldwin would be the perfect guy to “play” Myles Borden, the hero in The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn. As soon as she said his name, I knew that he was the right guy! Adam of Chuck and Firefly was the perfect model for Myles.

So Jess headed to San Diego last week for ComiCon, and she mentioned that she might try to get in line to meet Adam. I hooted and swooned appropriately. Then Jess suggested I might sign a copy of my book to Adam and she’d try to slip it to him. What a wonderful idea! I signed him a copy of the book that said something like “Dear Adam, you’re my hero. No seriously. I modeled the hero of my book after you. Love your work!”

When I first saw Jess on Tuesday after her return, I asked if she’d gotten a chance to give Adam my book, she said she’d just had time to slip it to him, and the line was moving fast, so he hadn’t said anything. Totally understandable, so I thanked her and promptly moved on.

So back to my office and Jess’ present. A little card on the front said, “About yesterday, I lied.” Huh? I was confused. Until I opened the gift and found an 8×10 framed copy of this picture:

    adam-baldwin-with-kenzie-thorn1

It’s Adam Baldwin! Holding a copy of my book! He’s holding MY BOOK! Giving it a thumbs up!!!!!!!!!!!!

To say I squealed would be an understatement. And the gift wasn’t even over. Jess had him sign a copy of my book back to me. “To Liz, Keep up the great works!!!!!” Oh, gosh! I can’t breathe, just remembering it! 🙂

Turns out Jess totally had time to give him my book that I signed for him, and he was excited about it.

Jess, you absolutely rock! This is one of the most complex and thoughtfully planned gifts I’ve ever gotten.

Hoping you all get amazing birthday presents until next time. -LJ

    Friday Favorite – The Unexpected

I love being home and visiting my family in Arizona, and one of my favorite parts is that you never know what the little girls are going to do.

Earlier this week, I walked over to see my sister and her family. They live just a couple houses down from my parents. I get there, step inside and kick off my shoes. I set my purse down next to my shoes and wandered off to talk to my sister and her husband and my oldest niece. We were laughing and chatting, when all of a sudden, my sister asked, “Where’s Rachel?”

We ducked our head around looking for her, and there, right by the front door, we saw this scene:

    img_0531

Yes, that’s my purse. Yes, that’s everything that was inside my purse, now out on the floor. 🙂 She’d even opened up my wallet and had my debit card waving in the breeze. (FYI, that pink microphone–not mine. Rachel brough that to the party.)

Back in Colorado I don’t have to worry about Amy taking my purse and dumping out all of its contents on the floor. I forget the little girls do things a little differently. And it’s a hoot!

Sure missing the wee ones when I’m not in AZ until next time. -LJ

    Friday Favorite – Camy Tang

I thought it would be fun today to share an interview I did recently with Camy Tang, another Steeple Hill author.

Camy, your first books are chick lits published by Zondervan. How does writing romantic suspense for Steeple Hill differ from your previous books?
It’s actually a really big mental change for me when writing romantic suspense versus chick lit. I have to “set the stage,” so to speak-I watch a bunch of CSI TV shows, play suspenseful music, and darken my office a bit. Even then, it sometimes takes a little while to get into the mindset of writing suspense instead of humor. I love writing both, so that must mean I have multiple personalities!

Tell us a little bit about your new book Deadly Intent.
    Here’s the back cover blurb:
    SCENE OF THE CRIME

The Grant family’s exclusive Sonoma spa is a place for rest and relaxation-not murder! Then Naomi Grant finds her deadly-intentclient Jessica Ortiz bleeding to death in her massage room, and everything falls apart. The salon’s reputation is at stake…and so is Naomi’s freedom when she discovers that she is one of the main suspects! Her only solace is found with the other suspect-Dr. Devon Knightley, the victim’s ex-husband. But Devon is hiding secrets of his own. When they come to light, where can Naomi turn…and whom can she trust?

Who’s your favorite character in this book? Why?
That’s like asking who’s my favorite child! I picture Alex O’Loughlin (from the canceled TV show Moonlight, who’s also got a new series coming out this year called Three Rivers) as my hero, Dr. Devon Knightley, so it was fun to picture his handsome face as I wrote his scenes!

Why did you set the book in the Sonoma Valley?
I love Sonoma! I enjoy visiting the wineries, especially with my dad when he visits me in California. I’ve seen some absolutely beautiful countryside as I drive through Sonoma and even further north toward Geyserville, and I just knew I wanted to set a story there.

Where were you/what were you doing when you got the call that Steeple Hill wanted a contract on Deadly Intent?
It wasn’t very dramatic, I was on the computer when my agent called. LOL I promptly emailed everyone I knew!

It’s Girls Night Out, and you’re next in line at karaoke. What’re you going to sing?
If I’ve had a glass of wine, you probably don’t want me to! LOL One song I really love is “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield, so I’d probably sing that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGlvZ3uYRB0)

If you could “borrow” one character from a movie, TV show, or another book for your current WIP, who would it be? Why?
Actually, I already did! I love Horatio Caine from CSI:Miami because he combines his own brand of “don’t mess with me” with moments of true compassion. So I “borrowed” him for Deadly Intent as Detective Carter! I also waved Naomi’s aunt Becca at him as a love interest. 🙂

camy_tang_pinkwebIf you had a Saturday all to your self-no deadlines, no commitments, no hubby (he’s off with his friends)-what’s the first thing you’d do?
Knit! And listen to audiobooks or watch a movie. I like doing lace knitting with audiobooks because I can pay attention to the intricate charts while still enjoying a good read!

What’s one bad habit that you have that you’ll never give to one of your characters?
I’m embarrassed to admit I don’t clean my house as often as I should. Since I don’t have kids, it doesn’t get “messy,” and if it’s not obviously dirty, I just don’t think to sweep or vacuum. I think if I gave that habit to a heroine, the reader wouldn’t like her very much!

Thanks for having me here, Liz!

    Thanks for joining us today!

A little more about Camy Tang:
Camy Tang writes romance with a kick of wasabi. She used to be a biologist, but now she is a staff worker for her church youth group and leads a worship team for Sunday service. She also runs the Story Sensei fiction critique service. On her blog, she gives away Christian novels every week, and she ponders frivolous things like dumb dogs (namely, hers), coffee-geek husbands (no resemblance to her own…), the writing journey, Asiana, and anything else that comes to mind. Visit her website at http://www.camytang.com/ for a huge website contest going on right now, giving away ten boxes of books and 30 copies of her latest release, DEADLY INTENT.

    GIVEAWAY!!! *bells and whistles*
And Camy has graciously agreed to giveaway a copy of her book. So leave a comment here with your favorite karaoke song, and you’ll be entered to win Deadly Intent. I’ll pick a winner next Friday.

If you don’t win or just can’t wait, you can pick up a copy of Camy’s book at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and CBD.com.

Happy reading until next time. -LJ

    Friday Favorite – Burn Notice

My name is Michael Weston.  I used to be a spy until … when you’re burned burn-noticeyou’ve got nothing. No cash. No credit. No job history. You’re stuck in whatever city they decide to dump you in. You do whatever work comes your way. You rely on anyone who’s still talking to you. A trigger-happy ex-girlfriend. (“Should we shoot them?”) An old friend, who used to inform on you to the FBI. Family too. If you’re desperate. Bottom line … until you figure out who burned you, you’re not going anywhere.

Thus begins every episode of Burn Notice, which–you guessed it–is about a spy who is burned. But he’s not just any spy. Michael Weston (played by Jeffrey Donovan) is thespy. He’s like MacGyver, only with bombs and guns and tracking down bad guys. Wait. That is totally like MacGyver. Okay … I got it … Michael is like MacGyver, only really cool! And modern–like making cell phones work even when there’s a signal blocker.

As a spy you have a lot of ways to get information. You can get it with a gun. You can get it with a lock pick. You can get it with a listening device. But most often, more than all the other information gatherin techniques combined, you get it with a free lunch.

Michael’s tips and tools of the trade between scenes are like a “how to” book for smart spys. Makes me want to be a spy. Except for the being shot at thing. But really, it’s awesome! Who knew getting lunch for an informant could get you everything you wanted?

Each episode Mike and the gang help someone in Miami who is in trouble. Single parents looking for their kids. Big brothers on the run from a gang because they were protecting family members. The combinations are endless, and Mike’s ability to solve the problems are incredible.

burn-notice2In a hostage situation any idiot can steal a gun and start shooting. It’s a great way to get a bunch of innocent people killed. Keeping people alive, means fighting like a spy.

One of my favorite things about this show is the supporting characters. Fiona, played by Gabrielle Anwar, who all you girls out there will remember from Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, is Michael’s arms dealing, sharp-shooting ex-girlfriend. Fi is spunky and funny, and the tension between Michael and her is almost enough to set my 6-year-old TV on fire … in a good way. 🙂

Sam, a former Navy SEAL, is Mike’s side-kick and the truest kind of friend. He literally has put his life at stake to keep Mike and Fi safe. And the bickering between Sam and Fi is generally laugh-out-loud funny.

Life with a hypocondriach mother gives you a useful knowledge of pharmacuticals.

Mike’s mom Madeline is forever asking him to go to family therapy, help his brother, or help one of her random neighbors. She doesn’t understand what Mike does, but she does know he’s a good man.

One of my favorite quirks in the show is Mike’s penchant for yogurt. Every episode, he’s spooning the good stuff in. Or going to the store to buy some more.

The one-liners are brilliant, and the dialogue is super-smart. If you haven’t seen this show yet, meander over to USA Network or pick up seasons 1 and 2, now available on dvd. This show absolutely rocks!

Thinking about a career as a spy until next time. I’d be an awesome spy! -LJ

Friday Favorite – Diet Dr. Pepper

It’s hard to say when my obsession with Diet Dr. Pepper started. It was probably back when the slogan was something like “Tastes more like regular Dr. Pepper.”

But I’m not a big fan of the taste of regular DP. Nope, I love the diet stuff. Seriously! It’s way better tasting with none of the calories. Score!

There’s something so wonderful about the the carbination and the sweet flavor. It’s like having a dessert, only you drink it! I can’t go more than a couple days without one. (Course that’s probably because of the caffeine.)

If you haven’t tried a Diet DP lately, I highly recommend you do.

    Friday Favorite: Robin Hood-BBC Style

Once upon a time … there was a sweet little blogger named Lady Liz. Hi LL.

    liz-johnson-author-32

Liz liked swinging on swings, reading fairy tales, and watching TV on dvd. Then one day, her roomate Amy sent her a link for a free month trial of Netflix.

    netflix

Of course, LL accepted the free offer, and soon was filling her queue with movies and TV on dvd to her hearts desire. But the first couple TV shows she tried were bad. Yuck. Poo. Then Netflix recommended a new TV show, and LL shrugged and said, “Sure. Sounds like fun.” Two days later, a little red envelope arrived in her mail box with the first disc in the BBC show Robin Hood.

    robin-hood-season-1

Minutes after putting the first disk into her computer, LL’s jaw dropped and her eyes bugged and she could not rip her attention from the screen in frong of her. Like every fairy tale she loves, the story of Robin Hood, Lady Marian, and Guy of Gisborne unfolds. What’s new is the snappy wit, amusing dialouge, ruckus sidekick Much, and utterly handsome Robin. Yup. LL discovered quite quickly that she had a little crush on the people’s hero, who robs from the rich and gives to the poor. And then she realized that if possible, Robin was cuter than ever because he shoots a bow and wears a …

    robin-hood

… HOODIE! That’s right, a greenish/brownish hoodie. In every episode. LL could barely contain the pitter patter of her little heart.

With the arrival of each new disc of this action-packed show, LL found that happily ever after arrived. Until the disc ended. And began again with the next disc. And quickly ended again. Tired of the back and forth, she decided to ask for the dvds for her birthday. If she gets them (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), then she’ll be happily forever after …

    Friday Favorite: Cake Wrecks

I hope you won’t hold it against me that I’m offering another website for the second week in a row. But this website, is just so worth it!

Welcome to CakeWrecks.blogspot.com – when professional cakes go horribly, hilariously wrong. Cake Wrecks and its creator Jen, just celebrated it’s first birthday, and boy has it been a funny year!

Not sure what a Cake Wreck is? Allow me to show, not tell:

    cake-wreck-1
    This cake started it all.
    cake-wreck-2
This was the cake requested for a lovely wedding.
    cake-wreck-3
This is the bride, looking at the cake that wasn't exactly what she was hoping for.

(Disclaimer: I hope it’s okay for me to borrow these pics.) I just can’t describe a cake wreck any better than these pics describe. But the real genius of the site is Jen, the host. Her snarky comments absolutely make the site the gem that it is.

Oh, and don’t miss out on Cake Wrecks the book! Only $9.55 at Amazon-available September 15. Oh, I’ll so be buying one of these. And you should too. 🙂

Laughing uproariously at cakes until next time. -LJ

    Friday Favorite – Evotional.com

This week, I thought I’d give a shout out to one of my favorite authors Mark Batterson and his blog Evotional.com. Mark is the pastor of National Community Church in Washington, DC (the church is something like 70% single 20- and 30-somethings, makes me think I ought to contemplate a move there) and the author of two of my favorite books: Wild Goose Chase and In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day.

Mark writes some of the most spiritually challenging books I’ve ever enjoyed! And he’s a great guy too. Check out his blog for fun stuff, and a really cool spiritual insights. Check out his books for a great read and a challenge for your walk with God. I love his section in Wild Goose Chase about setting goals.

I spent a day with Mark last summer at ICRS in Orlando. I was assigned to take him to all of his interviews one day, and, let me tell you, he is one of the most well-connected guys ever. He knew EVERYONE. I’m not even kidding! When I commented on it, he told me that there was no greater network than the kingdom of God. Got me thinking about how I relate to other Christians.

Plus, the man is a tweeting maniac! He tweets constantly and is the epitome of the tech-savvy pastor.  Gotta love how he uses technology to teach Truth. Thanks, Mark.

Following Mark’s tweets until next time. -LJ
